Skunk Activity

COLLEGE STATION POLICE DEPARTMENT
03/23/2012 - News: Skunk Activity

The College Station Police Department is once again asking for citizens to be especially careful due to the fact that during this time of year skunks become more active and the possibility of contact with these animals could increase.

If you or your animal come into contact with a skunk it is very important for you to call the police department. Rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus. In infected mammals, it is spread through the saliva and is contractible by any warm-blooded animal. Signs of a possible rabid animal are:

• Change in behavior - Nocturnal animals, like skunks, raccoons, coyotes, foxes and bats should not be out and about during the daylight hours.
• Unexplainable paralysis or inability to move
• Not eating or eating strange foods
• Pawing at the mouth
• Appearance of choking
• Difficu lty in swallowing
• Chewing at the site of a wound or bite site

If you witness any wild animal in the city, displaying the symptoms listed above, please call the College Station Police department at 979-764-3600. It is always important to keep your pet's vaccination current against rabies. It is also important to not let your pets to roam free where they might be at risk of coming in contact with a rabid animal.

The safety of our community does not have borders. It is the goal of every law enforcement agency to protect the citizens that we serve. Be the eyes and ears of your police department. When you see suspicious activity contact the College Station Police Department at 979-764-3600 or the Texas A&M University Police Department at 979-845-2345; contact the Bryan Police Department or the Brazos County Sheriff's Office at 979-361-3888. Together we can make a difference in our community.

Information on American Water Resources

Good Afternoon Neighbors!

College Station residents will soon begin receiving information from American Water Resources, a company that offers homeowners insurance for water & sewer line repairs.

The City of College Station wants residents to know that it doesn’t endorse specific offers by insurance companies to cover water and sewer line repairs on private property. Residents may be receiving such offers in the mail in the coming weeks.

“A lot of cities across the country endorse warranties offered by specific companies, but we expect the free market to make the best choices available to our citizens,” Water Services Director David Coleman said. “We are certainly not against the coverage itself, but we want to make it clear that the City of College Station is not partnering with any of these insurance companies. These offers should be considered carefully and on their own merits.”

In most cases, homeowners are responsible for repairs to water or sewer lines on their properties since the city’s responsibility ends at the meter or property line. For a monthly fee, warranty companies can provide coverage for water and sewer line repairs.

Also, please forward this information to others in your neighborhood or HOA . We want residents to know about this issue so that they can make an informed decision. If you have questions regarding this issue, feel free to email or call me.

Thank You,

Barbara Moore, MPA

Easter Celebration

Date(s): March 31, 2012
Time(s): 9:30 a.m. - noon
Location: George Bush Presidential Library and Museum

The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum will hold our annual Easter Celebration March 31 from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the museum. Activities will include entertainment, games, face painting, an Easter egg hunt, egg roll, egg toss, complimentary refreshments and photos with the Easter Bunny (must have own camera).

The College Station Easter Egg Hunt has been a long standing tradition hosted by the Police Department. From humble beginnings in 1982, the Easter Celebration has evolved to the highly-anticipated event of the spring. The Bush Library and Museum began partnering with the police department in 1998, and each year the event becomes increasingly popular with the local community, drawing larger and larger crowds. The museum has added activities to the event in an attempt to model the celebration after the White House Easter Egg Roll.

Specially designed wooden White House-style Easter Eggs are given to the children. There will be carnival games and activities, face painting and more. Local merchants contribute prizes to give away, and a boy's and a girl's bicycle and helmet will be awarded in each of the three age categories: 3 and under, 4-5 and 6-7. Parents must register their children to win.

A kite-flying contest will begin at 11 a.m. in the field across from the Bush Library and Museum. Children and adults who want to participate must bring their own kite.

Barbara Bush Drive will be closed to traffic before and during the event. Participants should access the museum via Research Drive, Discovery Drive or John Kimbrough Blvd. Parking will be available in the museum parking lot and Bush School lot (PA 111). Handicapped parking will be available in the museum parking lot.

New this year is a planned Ukrainian Easter Egg Decorating workshop. The workshop will teach how to decorate eggs with wax and dyes, creating the beautifully artistic designs for which Ukraine is famous. Places are limited so we urge you to join as soon as possible. The workshop is open to all 16 and older. The registration fee is $25, which will cover cost of supplies.
